FRIDAY 1300 MUSICAL DATA STRUCTURES AND INPUT LANGUAGES

Leland Smith (Stanford University) gave an overview of the SCORE program

which has been in use at several sites over the past ten years. He then

went on to demonstrate some of the newer features of the program. The

most useful of these new capabilities is the extended "Duty Factor" feature.

This allows for the easy simulation of many of the subtleties of musical

phrasing. Tape examples were presented containing progressive changes from

molto staccato to molto legato. SCORE's flexibility in handling a wide

range of musical situations was stressed.

FRIDAY 1515 MUSIC PRINTING

Leland Smith (Stanford) presented a film showing a group of computer

programs for the editing and printing of music. A sophisticated interactive

graphic editing program is used for data entry. After the basic musical

materials are in the system, a page layout program allows the music to be

organized on any number of pages desired. This same program is used for

automatically extracting separate player's parts from scores. All the standard

instrumental transpositions can also be done. Proof sheets are quickly

printed on an electrostatic plotting device. After the last corrections are

made, the master pages are printed at three to four times normal size on one

of the plotting devices. When the master sheets are photo-reduced, the final

printing approaches the quality of music engraving
